Privacy Policy for U-Gallery

Last updated: 2026-07-24

U-Gallery ("the app") is an Android gallery and file manager developed by Mako Co LLC. This policy explains what data the app accesses and how it is handled.

Summary

U-Gallery does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data. Everything the app does happens on your device.

Permissions the app requests

U-Gallery requests the following Android permissions solely to provide gallery and file-manager functionality:

PermissionWhy it is needed
READ_MEDIA_IMAGESRead photos on your device so you can browse them.
READ_MEDIA_VIDEORead videos on your device so you can browse and open them.
READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTEDOn Android 14 and later you may grant access to only a selection of your media rather than all of it. This permission lets the app remember that selection between launches, so you are not asked to re-pick every time.
MANAGE_MEDIAOptional. If you enable "Media management" for U-Gallery in Android Settings, move, copy, and delete operations you have already confirmed in the app proceed without an additional system dialog for each file. The app works normally without it — you simply confirm each operation.
SET_WALLPAPERSet a selected image as the device wallpaper when you use the "Set as wallpaper" action.

U-Gallery does not request All Files Access (MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE). The app can only see photos and videos, and only in the standard media locations. It cannot read documents, downloads, or other apps' files. MANAGE_MEDIA is a separate, narrower permission that applies only to media files and grants no access to anything else.

Writes are limited by Android to the Pictures/, DCIM/, and (for videos) Movies/ directories.

You can revoke any of these permissions at any time in Android Settings. Revoking them may disable the corresponding features.

Comics folder access

The CBZ comic reader asks you to pick one folder using the Android system folder picker. U-Gallery keeps read-only access to that folder so your library is still there next time you open the app. Comic archives are only ever read, never modified or deleted, and no other folder becomes accessible. You can revoke this at any time from within the app or by clearing the app's data.

Data storage

U-Gallery stores a small amount of information locally on your device to remember your preferences and organization:

This data is stored in the app's private storage (a local Room database, SharedPreferences, and a cache file). It is not accessible to other apps. Uninstalling the app removes it.

No photos or videos are copied into the app's own storage. When you move or copy media, the files stay in your device's normal media storage.

Android backup

U-Gallery participates in Android's standard backup system. If you have device backup enabled in your Android settings, the app's preferences and its album and favorites database may be included in your device backup and stored in your own Google account, the same way as for other apps on your device. This is handled entirely by Android — U-Gallery does not send this data anywhere itself, and neither Mako Co LLC nor anyone else can access it. Your photos and videos are not part of this; only the small preference and album records described above. You can turn device backup off in Android Settings.

External players

When you open a video and choose an external player via the system chooser, Android passes a URI for that video to the player you selected. U-Gallery has no control over how that third-party app handles the file; please consult that app's privacy policy.

Children's privacy

U-Gallery does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children.
